From the President`s Pen

CarolLongLtr1 Dear Geologist Wives Association Members,

We want to welcome you to a new year for our organization.  All of us – young, old, and in-between – have experienced the unique ups and downs of this business, and we are still around to enjoy it and each other.  This is a life of late night calls, long absent husbands, lots of money, and then no money!  You can’t get much more exciting than this.
But, for an organization to stay alive and interesting – activity is required.  Please try to come to all the meetings you can.  Visit with someone you don’t know.  Mix in with other age groups and enjoy this unusual group of wonderful women that have so much in common.
Join an interest group or start a new one.  It’s a great way to establish a comfortable group of friends.  We can all complain about the same kind of men who like to play in the dirt and take wild risks with our grocery money.
If you are a busy mom or work crazy hours, make a new group: dinner and a movie?  Bowling?  Antique shopping?  How about trying a new restaurant every month with club members or maybe having coffee on a Saturday morning?  And, while you’re at it, why not offer a ride to the ladies who no longer drive.
We are going to have an excellent year.  Lets make our group fun and wear that great gold nugget oil well jewelry, belt buckles, or whatever with pride.

Sincerely,
         Carol Long, President

Events of 2000

Events2000 In June Shirley and Herb Davis took their two daughters to Alaska (inside passage cruise).  And in September Shirley and Herb went to visit friends in Germany and Austria.

In September we met at Alisha`s Tea Room.  Chartered and Honorary Life members were introduced.  It was a great beginning - and everyone was happy to see each other after the summer months.

October - Our traditional fish fry at the home of Sherrill and Mary Frances Howery in Norman.  We appreciate their hospitality.

Our November meeting was a fun trip to Gainesville, Texas, was a wonderful experience going by train.  Nineteen women attended the holiday shopping, lunch and visiting.

December - Christmas Encore at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.  Club members decorate all tables.

Ken and Nina Kemp celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a cocktail buffet at the Petroleum Club.  Their four children hosted it.  It was a lovely affair for two very special people.

Carol Long and her mother-in-law, Jessamy Long, had a wonderful trip to New York mid-December.  It was sponsored by Senior Elderhostel.  They stayed at the YMCA across from Central Park.  It was well organized with educational programs - they stayed with museums.  And they had time to shop, go to the Statue of Liberty, see a Broadway show, the Music Man, and enjoy the Christmas Show with the Rockettes at the Radio City Music Halt, and visit a jazz bar in Harlem.  Carol is 2nd Vice President of the Geo Wives.

Goodbye

Goodbye2000 Goodbye to friend Virginia (Martz) Buck who passed away September 13, 2000.  She was born in Jenks, Oklahoma, July 16, 1920.  It`s noted that a park in Watonga was named after Virginia.  She was an experienced draft person.  In 1985 when she moved to Oklahoma City, she sold real estate.  In 1997 she renewed the acquaintance with Harry Buck a long time friend, and they married.  Her husband Harry, one daughter, a brother and sister and two grandchildren survive her.

Goodbye to our friend Pat Strothmann who passed away November 2, 2000.  Pat was born April 23, 1923 in Toronto, Canada.  She grew up in East Orange, New Jersey where she met and married Fred, October 7, 1945.  They were married 55 years.  They had two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.  She was a devoted mother and dedicated to Christ the King Parish and school and John the Baptist Catholic Church.  Also, the Oklahoma Orchid Society and a chartered member of the Geologist`s Wives.  She will be remembered as a precious lady.

GeoWives History

The Oklahoma City Geologists` Wives was organized September 1921, the founders being Mrs. Ben Baldwin, Mrs. Forrest Wimbish, Mrs. D.J. Costa and Mrs. Wayne Abbott.

Membership is open to those whose husbands are practicing geologists or who hold a degree in geology, or who belong to the Oklahoma City Geological Society or the AAPG and all women practicing geologists, or who hold a degree in geology.

On first Friday of each month the Wives meet for lunch and bridge or canasta at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, for the period of September through June. They close the season with a dinner dance for husbands and friends. Membership dues are $2 a year.

A night group of Wives was organized in March 1949, by Mrs. Joe Sears - with husbands to be baby-sitters! Mrs. Margaret Smith was first hostess chairman, with Mrs. Ed Unger being hostess chairman for the coming season. This group meets on the third Monday of each month at the Biltmore Hotel, at 7:30 o`clock, for dessert and bridge.
