Abstract:

In an increasingly cost-conscience reality, it is vital to optimize well placement so that productivity and rate of return on investment are maximized. E&P companies operating in unconventional plays are commonly challenged to place wells in a sweet spot of less than 10 feet thick within formations that are 100 feet thick or more. This presentation will highlight how a 3D geocellular model can be directly used to optimize well placement throughout the life of an asset. In a new asset, a simple model can be built by correlating past well placement to known production rates in order to identify historically productive intervals - allowing operators to quickly create optimal first pass well plans, even when data is limited. This enables an easier permitting process and a more accurate field development strategy from the beginning. Over the life of the asset, this model can be continuously refined with subsurface data and interpretations – allowing for advanced data analytics to be leveraged so that complex reservoir questions can be distilled down into simple concepts that can be used for optimal sweet spot targeting.
